Activities in La Palma: Best Experiences and Unique Tours

Experiences in La Palma to truly discover the island

Kayak at Porís de Candelaria

Experience a unique kayak excursion from the spectacular Porís de Candelaria to the stunning Cueva Bonita, on the coast of the municipality of Tijarafe. Cueva Bonita is a true gem of La Palma and one of the most iconic locations in the Canary Islands archipelago. Accessible only by sea, discovering it by kayak is one of the most special, exciting and safe ways to explore it at your own pace.

The route begins at Porís de Candelaria, a unique enclave where the old fishermen's houses are built inside an enormous cave at sea level, creating a one-of-a-kind landscape full of history, tradition and beauty. From there, we paddle along the coast to Cueva Bonita and, if sea conditions allow, we enter its interior to admire its spectacular natural formation.

Additionally, during the route, whenever sea conditions permit, we can discover hidden beaches and natural rock pools. The activity finishes by returning to the starting point at Porís de Candelaria, after an unforgettable experience among caves, cliffs and crystal-clear waters.

What's included?

🚻 We have a toilet with running water. Right down at Porís de Candelaria, it is available to you for anything you need before or after paddling. No worries.

How to get to Porís de Candelaria

We know the access to Porís might seem tricky, but don't worry. The road is perfectly safe if you drive calmly. The route descends from the main road along a paved track with tight bends and a steep gradient. Although the drive can feel daunting the first time, it's a road in good condition used by vehicles daily. We recommend going slowly, using low gears on the descent and enjoying the spectacular cliff views. You'll find a parking area at the bottom. The drive from the main road takes about 10-15 minutes. If you prefer, we can send you detailed directions via WhatsApp before your visit.

Prefer not to drive? You can come down by taxi (optional)

We know the road can be intimidating, so we work with Jessica, a trusted local taxi driver with plenty of experience on the way down to Porís, who offers pick-up and drop-off from Tijarafe. It is an optional service and is not included in the activity price; the cost depends on the number of participants who use the taxi.

It is best to arrange it in advance: message us on WhatsApp and we will help you organise it, so when the kayak finishes you can enjoy some extra time at Porís at your own pace if you like.

Safety

Your safety is our top priority. All participants receive a life jacket and a briefing before setting off. In summer, the west coast of La Palma enjoys exceptionally calm sea conditions. The waters are usually still, making this activity suitable for all levels, including beginners and families with children. Our local guides know the area inside out and constantly monitor weather conditions. If sea conditions are not favourable, the activity is rescheduled or a full refund is offered.

Frequently asked questions

It's my first time kayaking, is it difficult?

Not at all. The route is designed for all levels. Our guides give an initial briefing and the sea is usually calm.

Do I need to be very fit?

You don't need to be an athlete. If you can ride a bike for a while, you can do this route.

Should I bring my phone or camera?

Yes, bring it. We give you a waterproof pouch to protect it, and we promise you are going to want lots of photos.

What happens if the weather changes?

If the sea doesn't cooperate, we reschedule at no cost. Safety comes first.

Can I go with children?

Yes, from 5 years old. The little ones go in the kayak with an adult and we give them a life jacket in their size.

What if I get seasick?

On the west coast in summer the sea is like a river, but if you're sensitive, take a pill beforehand and paddle without worry.

How long does the activity last?

The daytime kayak usually lasts between an hour and a half and two hours, and the sunset kayak between two and three hours. In both we adapt to the group's pace: if someone needs to head back earlier, no problem, and if the moment is right we stay a little longer. What matters is enjoying it to the fullest.

How do I get to Porís? Is there a taxi option?

You go down a narrow, winding road with limited parking. If you would rather not drive, we work with Jessica, a local taxi driver (+34 618 30 93 49), who does pick-up and drop-off from Tijarafe. It is optional and not included; the price depends on the number of people. Message us on WhatsApp and we will help you organise it.

Is there a toilet at Porís?

Yes. Down at Porís de Candelaria itself, we have a toilet with running water available for you.
