Guided hike to the rim of the 2021 eruption cone
On 19 September 2021, the ground split open along the Cumbre Vieja ridge and gave birth to Tajogaite, the youngest volcano in Europe. On this guided route you will walk right up to one of the most striking and recent landscapes on the planet, exactly where nature rewrote the map of La Palma in a matter of weeks.
There are two sides to this story. The hardest one is that of the homes, farms and memories the volcano swept away for so many local families. And the most awe-inspiring is seeing what nature was able to create in just a few months: a brand-new land, black and silent, that is now part of the island.
We take you walking right up to the very rim of the Tajogaite cone, the closest point you can visit today, along a comfortable trail of about 8 km. Along the way you will pass Montaña Quemada (the historic volcano of Tacande) and grasp first-hand the sheer power of the eruption. The experience also includes a documentary video of the 2021 eruption filmed by photographer Saúl Santos.
Food and drinks are not included (bring your own water and a snack).
The activity departs from the La Palma Outdoor office in El Paso (C/ Antonio Pino Pérez, 1). From there, a transfer takes you to the start of the route, in the Llanos del Jable area. We recommend arriving a few minutes early so the group can get organised at a relaxed pace.
Comfortable clothing and closed hiking shoes, a jacket or windbreaker in case it gets cooler or rains, sunscreen and a cap, and plenty of water and food. The weather on the mountain changes quickly, so it is best to come prepared. Important: do not stray from the marked trails.
